The National Animal Identification System and Horses:
The Latest from the Equine Species Working Group

By Judith McGeary1

Second in a series...

The National Institute for Animal Agriculture hosted its annual Animal ID Expo in Kansas City on August 22-24. This provided a wonderful opportunity to hear what the government officials and industry representatives had to say about the National Animal Identification System, or NAIS.

Among the industry representatives were members of the Equine Species Working Group (ESWG). The ESWG members were appointed by the American Horse Council in 2003. At some point, the U.S. Department of Agriculture “recognized” the ESWG as the official working group for the horse industry. "With Equestrian Tact: The International Video
Magazine of the Equestrian Sports"

S.F. Chronicle feature story highlights work of SportsQuest International and HorseTV

Conceived and developed by SportsQuest International, "With Equestrian Tact..." will bring a fresh new perspective to coverage of national and international equestrian events. The series preview and two Badminton Horse Trials specials have been well received in their initial broadcasts as HorseTV presentations in the United States on the America One Television network.

The program series will include interviews with riders, trainers, owners, breeders and officials involved in various equestrian disciplines at the national and international levels. Also to be included are carefully crafted feature reports examining trends in specialized areas of viewer interest including: course design, sport horse breeding, nutrition and equestrian fashion.

The broad international focus of this series is in keeping with SportsQuest International’s basic commitment to the furtherance of cross cultural communication and international understanding through the vehicle of sport.

Segments on sport horse breeding will examine ideas and techniques incorporated by successful breeders throughout the world. Producers will seek input from knowledgeable trainers, veterinarians, geneticists, stallion managers and representatives of various industry organizations.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements regarding the availability of this series worldwide.
